UK space industry plans unveiled

Ambitious plans have been unveiled for a giant leap into space that would create a UK industry worth £40 billion a year and 100,000 new jobs.

The 20-year vision, outlined by a collaborative group of Government experts, heads of industry and scientists, aims to expand Britain share of the global space market from 6% to 10% by 2030. Much of the focus would be on potentially lucrative satellite technology, an area in which the UK excels.

To achieve the growth needed will require many millions of pounds of private investment, and a doubling of the Government’s space funding to £550 million a year over the next decade. But the rewards could be enormous, according to a report published by the Space Innovation and Growth Team (Space IGT).

Demand for space technology is booming with the worldwide market predicted to grow from £160 billion in 2008 to £400 billion by 2030.

The Space Innovation and Growth Strategy report calls for a six-fold increase in the size of the UK’s space sector, generating an industry worth £40 billion a year that would secure 100,000 new jobs.

Currently, Britain ranks 21st in the world in the league table of national space investment. France, Germany and Italy all spend proportionately more, placing them in the top 10. A doubling of Government spending would move the UK to 10th place in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) invested in space. The higher level of national funding would also allow the UK to play a bigger role in European Space Agency (ESA) programmes.

Per raggiungere la crescita necessaria saranno necessari molti milioni di sterline di investimenti privati, ed il raddopio dei fondi governativi per lo spazio fino a 550 milioni di sterline all’anno nella prossima decade. Ma il rientro potrebbe essere enorme, secondo il rapporto pubblicato dallo Space Innovation and Growth Team (Space IGT).

La domanda per la tecnologia spaziale sta esplodendo con il mercato mondiale in previsione di crescita da 160 miliardi di sterline del 2008 a 400 miliardi nel 2030.

U2 and Jay-Z team up for Haiti charity single

U2 have teamed up with Jay-Z to release a charity single in aid of victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Speaking to Irish radio station 2FM, U2 guitarist the Edge said the song was written and recorded last week after producer Swizz Beatz contacted Bono.

“Bono got a call from a producer, Swizz. He and Jay-Z wanted to do something for Haiti. So Bono came up with a phrase on the phone and last night we wrote a song, finished, recorded, and sent it back to them. So, that might be the next thing you hear from us.”

It is not clear when the single will be released, but the band are set to perform with Jay-Z as part of the Hope for Haiti telethon in the US this Friday (22 January). Rihanna and Alicia Keys are also reported to be performing at the fundraising event.

Other musicians contributing to the Haiti cause include Lady Gaga, who will donate the proceeds of a forthcoming concert in New York to the relief effort. Elsewhere, Scottish indie rockers Mogwai have announced they are auctioning the band’s piano on eBay and will donate the money to Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders.

The Hope for Haiti telethon will be screened on a number of US networks this Friday and can be seen live on MTV UK from 1am on Saturday (23 January). All proceeds will go to a number of charities, including Red Cross and Haiti-based charity Partners in Health.

Gli U2 si sono messi insieme a Jay-Z per fare un singolo in aiuto delle vittime del terremoto ad Haiti. Parlando alla radio irlandese 2FM, il chitarrista degli U2, the Edge, ha detto che la canzone è stata scritta e registrata la settimana scorsa dopo che il produttore Swizz Beatz ha contattato Bono.

“Bono ha avuto una chiamata dal produttore Swizz. Lui e Jay-Z volevano fare qualcosa per Haiti. Così Bono se ne è uscito con una frase al telefono e ieri sera abbiamo scritto una canzone, e l’abbiamo mandata a loro. Così, quella potrebbe essere la prossima cosa che sentite fatta da noi”

Susan Boyle’s album set to become year’s fastest selling

Susan Boyle’s new album I Dreamed A Dream is on target to become the fastest selling of the year.

It looks set to shift up to 150,000 copies on the first day of its release on Monday, a store said.

HMV said initial sales from the chain and other entertainment retailers suggested Boyle’s debut album has been selling an amount that most major new albums would typically sell in a week.

The figure includes massive online pre-orders that have been placed by customers over the past few weeks.

HMV is revising its estimate for total weekly sales upwards, from the 300,000 that the retailer initially projected, to a figure closer to 400,000.

This would make the album the biggest and fastest-selling release of 2009. The sales would be comparable to those of Take That’s The Circus in December last year, which sold 432,490 copies in its week of release.

The chain reported that sales are particularly huge in Scotland, where some customers are snapping up multiple copies.

HMV is now also predicting that the album will be the Christmas number one.

The store’s Gennaro Castaldo said: ”The Susan Boyle story just keeps getting bigger and more fantastic.

”Our hmv.com online store had one of its largest-ever pre-orders for an album and now we’re seeing a huge surge in demand in our stores, though especially in Susan’s native Scotland.

”People of all ages seem to be buying it, and it’s clearly going to be one of the must-have gift items this Christmas.

”Susan’s accomplished performance on the X Factor has given the album a massive, timely boost, and it now has the momentum to challenge the likes of Leona, JLS and The Soldiers for the Christmas number one.”

La catena HMV sta rivedendo le sue stime di vendita settimanali al rialzo, dalle 300.000 inizialmente previste, ad una cifra più vicina alle 400.000.

Questo renderebbe il disco la più grande e più veloce vendita del 2009. Le vendite sarebbero comparabili con quelle di Circus dei Take That del dicembre dell’anno scorso, che ha venduto 432.490 copie nella settimana d’uscita.

La catena ha riportato vendite particolarmente alte in Scozia, dove alcuni clienti comprano più di una copia.

Breakfast is the saltiest meal of the day for many Britons, the Food Standards Agency has warned.
A survey for the government’s food watchdog found three quarters of consumers are unaware that bread, meat and cereals contribute most to their salt intake.

It also found Britons still consume an average of 2.6g more than the recommended daily limit of 6g and that almost one third are not worried about how much salt they eat.

Only 13 per cent correctly identified bread as the main source of salt in their diet and a similar number knew breakfast cereals were ranked third. Meat products, including sausages and bacon, are the second-highest contributors.

Nearly three quarters of respondents incorrectly believed crisps add most salt to their diet when they are actually ranked 10th on the list, behind cheese, butter, baked beans, ready meals, soups and pizzas.

“For many people it means breakfast is the saltiest meal they will have all day and they are not even aware of that,” said a spokeswoman for the FSA.

Meanwhile, a separate study by the campaign group Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) found supermarket own-brand and ‘value’ ranges often have lower levels of salt than premium brands.

The Cash research found that of all sugared cornflakes, Kellogg’s Cornflakes had the most salt while Tesco Value Cornflakes had the least. At Tesco online, a 750g packet of Kellogg’s costs £2.26 – 30p per 100g – compared with 14p per 100g for the supermarket’s value range.

Cash also found Heinz tomato ketchup had 3.1g of salt per 100g compared with 0.9g per 100g in Asda Smart Price Ketchup. A Heinz spokesman said its was introducing new recipes with lower salt.

Many food firms have dramatically reduced the amount of salt in products in recent years.

The FSA, which is launching a new television advertising campaign today, said it was important to realise that the foods which contribute the most salt are not necessarily the saltiest, but the ones eaten most often.

Rosemary Hignett, the FSA’s head of nutrition, said: “It isn’t just the obvious things we need to watch out for as far as salt is concerned.”

“We’re not suggesting people stop eating or even cut down on bread or breakfast cereals, as they are important part of a healthy diet.

“But we are saying take a look at the labels to find one that is lower in salt.”

The Federation of Bakers said it has worked with the FSA to meet salt-reduction targets in breads across the industry.

Eating too much salt can raise blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing heart disease or stroke. Top 10 foods which contribute most to our daily salt intake, according to the FSA:

“Per molte persone significa che la colazione è il pasto più salato che avranno per tutta la giornata e non ne sono neppure consapevoli” ha detto un portavoce della FSA.

Allo stesso tempo, uno studio separato eseguito dal gruppo Azione di Consenso su Sale e Salute (CASH) ha scoperto che i marchi prodotti dai supermercati hanno spesso valori di sale meno elevati rispetto alle grandi marche.

La ricerca del CASH ha scoperto che di tutti i fiocchi di cereali, i Kellogg’s hanno maggiori quantità di sale mentre quelli prodotti dai supermercati Tesco hanno il minimo. Il prezzo online sul sito di Tesco è di 2.26 sterline per 750 grammi di Kellogg’s (30 centesimi per 100 grammi) mentre quello prodotto dal supermercato costa 14 centesimi.

Il CASH ha anche scoperto che il ketchup di pomodoro della Heinz ha 3.1 grammi di sale ogni 100 grammi, mentre quello prodotto dai supermercati Asda ne ha solamente 0.9 grammi. Un portavoce della Heinz ha detto che l’azienda stava per creare nuove ricette con meno sale.

Molte aziende alimentari hanno drammaticametne ridotto le quantità di sale nei loro prodotti negli anni recenti.

La FSA, che sta lanciando una nuova campagna pubblicitaria televisiva oggi, ha detto che è importante realizzare che i cibi che danno più sale non sono quelli necessariamente più salati, ma quelli che sono mangiati più spesso.

Rare bat rewrites record books

One of Europe’s rarest bats has been found at a site in Wales further west than ever before recorded.

The Bechstein’s bat is an elusive creature that likes to hide in the undergrowth of ancient woodland.

It lives in a number of countries in western, central and southern Europe, but is rare throughout its range.

Now a researcher from the University of Bristol has identified a solitary male specimen, 100km west of the nearest previously recorded site.

University of Bristol researcher Matt Zeale found the bat while pursuing another species in woodland owned by The National Trust at Colby in southern Pembrokeshire.

He told BBC News he couldn’t believe his eyes when he found it in his trap: “I was really shocked though it was a nice surprise as well.

“Bechstein’s have these quite long ears and a few other features you can use to tell them apart from the other species we have in the UK. So it was the first thing I thought of.

“Because they have never been recorded anywhere remotely near here, I had to double take and triple take and re-measure and re-measure just to make sure.”

Ultrasonic bat lure

Mr Zeale was using an ultrasonic bat lure to attract a slightly less rare species, the Barbastelle, as part of his PhD research. The device makes bat calls for specific species so he was doubly surprised to find that he had caught a Bechstein’s bat.

Having made his measurements, Mr Zeale let the bat go. He says what it was doing in this location is a mystery. Not only is it a long way from other recorded Bechstein sites, but the area is generally considered too wet for the species, which generally prefers dry conditions.

David Bullock, the National Trust’s head of nature conservation said: “We can only speculate where this male Bechstein’s bat might have come from. He either made an incredible journey from the Forest of Dean or Herefordshire or more likely there are other roosting sites waiting to be discovered in Pembrokeshire.”

Raro pipistrello riscrive i manuali di scienza

Esca ultrasonica per pipistrello

Il signor Zeale stava usando una esca ultrasonica per attrarre una razza leggermente meno rara, il Barbastelle, per la sua tesi di laurea. L’attrezzo attrae pipistrelli di razze specifiche così è stato doppiamente sorpreso quando ha preso un pipistrello Bechstein.

Dopo avere preso le sue misure, il signor Zeale ha lasciato il pipistrello libero. Ha detto che ciò che il pipistrello stava facendo sul luogo è un mistero. Non solo si trova molto distante da altri siti di avvistamento, ma l’area è generalmente considerata troppo umida per la specie, che preferisce generalmente condizioni secche.

Google logo mystery is HG Wells tribute

The mystery of why Google has adopted strange logos on its home page for the last month has finally been solved.

Google’s latest doodle, showing the company’s name spelt out in crop circles, has sparked a flurry of speculation online

Web users have been baffled by a series of changes to the famous logo with seemingly no explanation.

There was speculation that the reason may have been linked to a Japanese video game, Zero Wing, after the search engine posted a list of numbers on Twitter.

But Google has now revealed that the logos – which included UFOs, crop circles and the “abduction” of the letter “o” in its name – were all a tribute to HG Wells who was born 143 years ago.

The English author is best known for his 1898 science fiction novel The War of the Worlds, which was turned into a musical in 1978 starring Richard Burton as the narrator.

Upon revealing the answer to its clues Google said : “We’re finally acknowledging the reason for the doodles with an official nod to Herbert George, who would be 143 years old today.

“Inspiration for innovation in technology and design can come from lots of places; we wanted to celebrate HG Wells as an author who encouraged fantastical thinking about what it possible, on this planet and beyond.”

When Google released a Twitter message which read “51.327629, -0.5616088″, web sleuths found that the string of numbers was the latitude and longitude for Woodham Road in Woking, Surrey.

Diabolik posted one theory on Twitter: “The War of the Worlds (1898), by HG Wells, based in Horsell Common north of Woking, was an early science fiction novel which describes an invasion of England by aliens from Mars. It is one of the earliest and best-known depictions of an alien invasion.”

Another, Joshgjohnson, tweeted: “HG Wells birthday is Sept 21. This is a ‘lead-up’ as was Sept 5th logo.”

In response, Google said: “Some of you figured out what we were doing, but we weren’t ready to reveal it all just yet.”

Quando Google ha rilsciato un messaggio su Twitter su cui era scritto “51.327629, -0.5616088″, gli investigatori del web hanno trovato che i numeri erano le coordinate per for Woodham Road nella città di Woking, Surrey.

L’utente Diabolik ha postato una sua teoria su Twitter: “La guerra dei Mondi (1898), di HG Wells, che si svolge a Horsell Common a nord di Woking, è un racconto che narra l’invasione dell’Inghilterra da parte di alieni marziani. E una delle prime e migliori rappresentazioni di una invasione aliena”

Un altro utente, Joshgjohnson, ha scritto “Il compleanno di HG Wells è il 21 settembre. Questo è un altro indizio come lo era il logo del 5 settembre”

In risposta Google ha detto “Alcuni di voi hanno capito cosa stavamo facendo, ma non eravamo ancora pronti a rivelarlo.

England midfielder Frank Lampard is confident manager Fabio Capello will make the correct decision when selecting between Emile Heskey or Jermain Defoe.

The Three Lions face Croatia at Wembley on Wednesday in a World Cup qualifier and a win would guarantee a place in the finals in South Africa in 2010.

Capello has a welcome selection headache ahead of the fixture where he must choose between Heskey, who has started recent matches, and substitute Defoe.

Tottenham star Defoe is in form after scoring five times in his last three internationals and there have been calls for the forward to be promoted above Heskey to the first XI.

Lampard, who was at West Ham with Defoe earlier in their careers, recognises the strengths of both players, and has backed Capello to make the right decision, telling a press conference live on Sky Sports News: “The question is the manager’s decision.

“We all have faith in the manager. He has shown in his career, and now, that he makes the right decisions, more than not.

“I think both players have made great cases. Jermain has made the headlines because of his goalscoring.

“I’ve known Jermain since he was 16 years of age and knew he was going to go to the top because he is a natural goalscorer and that doesn’t come around that often.

“Emile has made a great case constantly in the way he has played for England for a very long time.

“So the manager has a great option there for two different styles and it depends on the manager’s decision which way it goes.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Lampard has laughed off the claims from Croatia boss Slaven Bilic, who he was also at West Ham with during the 1996/97 season, that the current England side lack an ‘Englishness’ under Capello.

Concentrate

“I think Slaven is a very clever manager, a clever man, and he is saying things, probably, to get his own team worked up, to get them ready for the game,” said the 31-year-old.

“Maybe it is things to get in our heads. It is very important we don’t let all the talk affect us. We have to concentrate on getting ready for the game and playing.

“Certainly, the way we are playing at the moment, there is a confidence, there is a strength and a spirit in the team.”

When pushed on the subject of ‘Englishness’, he added: “I don’t understand what that means. We are an English team trying to win games. I don’t know what ‘missing Englishness’ means.”

Il centrocampista della nazionale inglese Frank Lampard ha fiducia che l’allenatore Fabio Capello farà la scelta giusta quando dovrà scegliere tra Emile Heskey e Jermain Defoe.

I tre leoni affrontano la Croazia a Wembley mercoledì per le qualificazioni della coppa del mondo ed una vittoria garantirebbe un posto alle fasi finali in SudAfrica del 2010.

Capello ha un difficile problema in vista della partita quando dovrà decidere chi schierare tra Heskey, che ha cominciato le ultime partite, ed il suo sostituto Defoe.

La star del Totthenam Defoe è in forma dopo avere segnato 5 goals nelle ultime 3 partite internazionali e ci sono state richieste per promuovere l’attaccante nell’undici titolare al posto di Heskey.

Lampard, che è stato al West Ham con Defoe all’inizio delle rispettive carrirere, riconosce la forza di entrambi i giocatori, ed è sicuro che Capello prenderà la decisione giusta, dicendo ad una conferenza su Sky Sports News: “La decisione è tutta del’allenatore.

“Abbiamo tutti fiducia nell’allenatore. Ha mostrato nella sua carriera, ed adesso, di fare scelte giuste nella maggior parte dei casi.

“Penso che entrambi i giocatori stiano giocando alla grande. Jermain è sui titoli dei giornali a causa del nuomero dei suoi goals.

“Conosco Jermain da quando aveva 16 anni e sapevo che avrebbe fatto carriera perchè è uno che segna in maniera naturale e non ce ne sono molti come lui.

“Emile ha giocato costantemente bene per l’Inghilterra per molto tempo.

“Così l’allenatore ha due grandi opzioni per due diversi stili di gioco e le cose dipenderanno dalla decisione dell’allenatore ”

Nel frattempo il centrocampista del Chelsea Lampard ha riso alle dichiarazioni dell’allenatore della Croazia Slaven Bilic che ha detto che la squadra Inglese manca di ‘inglesità’ sotto gli ordini di Capello. Bilic è stato anche lui al West Ham con Lampard nella stagione 1996/97.

Concentrarsi

“Penso che Slaven sia un allenatore molto intelligente, e che dice cose per caricare la sua squadra, per prepararli alla partita”, ha detto il trentunenne.

“Forse vuole influenzarci. E’ molto importante che non ci lasciamo influenzare da questi discorsi. Dobbiamo solo concentrarci nel prepararci per la partita e giocarla.

“Certamente, nel modo in cui stiamo giocando al momento, c’è sicurezza, ci sono forza e spirito nella squadra”

Se provocato riguardo all ‘inglesità’ risponde: “NOn capisco cosa significhi. Siamo una squadra inglese che prova a vincere. Non so cosa significhi mancanza di ‘inglesità’”
