Espressioni in inglese con la parola Roof (tetto)

Abbiamo già elencato alcune espressioni idiomatiche inglesi che contengono la parola ‘house (casa), ora ne vediamo altre che invece hanno a che fare con una parte della casa: the roof (il tetto).

to have a roof over your head‘ (avere un tetto sopra la testa) corrisponde esattamente all’italiano e significa avere un posto dove vivere.
Per esempio: after all we still have a roof over our heads (dopotutto abbiamo ancora un tetto sopra la testa)

Se qualcuno ‘hits the roof‘ (colpisce il tetto) vuol dire che è molto arrabbiato.
Per esempio: they are going to hit the roof when they find out what happened to the money (si arrabbieranno molto quando scopriranno che fine ha fatto il denaro)

La frase ‘be like a cat on a hot tin roof‘ (essere come un gatto su un tetto di lamiera caldo) serve a descrivere persone che sono molto nervose ed irrequiete.
Per esempio: why can’t you relax? you are like a cat on a hot tin roof (perchè non riesci a rilassarti? sei molto nervoso)

Quando un prezzo ‘goes through the roof‘( va attraverso il tetto) significa che si è alzato moltissimo.
Per esempio: the price of old microphones is going through the roof (il prezzo dei vecchi microfoni si sta alzando moltissimo)

Per terminare, l’espressione ‘raise the roof‘ (alzare il tetto) vuole dire mostrare grande entusiasmo riguardo a qualcosa.
Per esempio: my village is going to raise the roof when the prime minister comes (il mio villaggio mostrerà grande entusiasmo quando verrà il primo ministro)
