Barack Obama is to host a special boys’ beer night at the White House on Thursday in an attempt to defuse simmering racial tensions over the arrest of a prominent black academic by a white police officer
Henry Louis Gates, a Harvard professor, and James Crowley, the Massachusetts police officer who arrested him after he forced his way into his own home, have been invited to join the US president for a beer on Thursday evening.

The trio have all become embroiled in a row in which Prof Gates alleged he had been a victim of racial discrimination to the anger of police who said the academic had lost his temper and was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Mr Obama, a friend of Prof Gates, became involved after he told a press conference that the police in Cambridge, Massachusetts, had “acted stupidly” in the affair.

As it gradually emerged that he had spoken hastily, the president rang Mr Crowley on Friday to express regret for his choice of words and to invite the pair to the White House for a beer.

The president’s spokesman described the planned meeting as “a chance to talk and a chance to have a dialogue,” adding that the meeting offered a “teachable moment”.

He added: “Weather permitting, they’ll probably sit at the picnic table, behind the Oval Office.”

According to the White House, Mr Crowley has asked for Blue Moon beer, while Mr Obama will be drinking Budweiser. No details have been given about Mr Gates’ beer of choice but, fortunately for the colour theme, he is reported to like Red Stripe, a Jamaican lager.

Colin Powell, the former US secretary of state, was mildly critical of Prof Gates on Tuesday.

The academic “might have waited a while, come outside, talked to the officer, and that might have been the end of it” said Mr Powell.
“I think he should have reflected on whether or not this was the time to make that big a deal.”

Il portavoce del presidente ha descritto l’incontro pianificato come una ‘possibilità di parlare e di avere un dialogo’ aggiungendo che l’incontro può offrire un “momento per imparare”.

Non sono stati dati altri dettagli riguardo alla birra scelta dal signor Gates ma, per completare lo schema di colori, è stato riferito che gli piace la Red Stripe, una birra bionda giamaicana.
Colin Powell, il precedente segretario di stato americano, è stato leggermente critico riguardo al professor Gates, martedì scorso.
L’accademico “avrebbe potuto aspettare un attimo, uscire, parlare col poliziotto, e sarebbe potuto finire tutto li” ha detto Powell.
“Penso che avrebbe dovuto riflettere se fosse o meno il momento di creare un problema così grande”.
