Google logo mystery is HG Wells tribute

The mystery of why Google has adopted strange logos on its home page for the last month has finally been solved.

Google’s latest doodle, showing the company’s name spelt out in crop circles, has sparked a flurry of speculation online

Web users have been baffled by a series of changes to the famous logo with seemingly no explanation.

There was speculation that the reason may have been linked to a Japanese video game, Zero Wing, after the search engine posted a list of numbers on Twitter.

But Google has now revealed that the logos – which included UFOs, crop circles and the “abduction” of the letter “o” in its name – were all a tribute to HG Wells who was born 143 years ago.

The English author is best known for his 1898 science fiction novel The War of the Worlds, which was turned into a musical in 1978 starring Richard Burton as the narrator.

Upon revealing the answer to its clues Google said : “We’re finally acknowledging the reason for the doodles with an official nod to Herbert George, who would be 143 years old today.

“Inspiration for innovation in technology and design can come from lots of places; we wanted to celebrate HG Wells as an author who encouraged fantastical thinking about what it possible, on this planet and beyond.”

When Google released a Twitter message which read “51.327629, -0.5616088″, web sleuths found that the string of numbers was the latitude and longitude for Woodham Road in Woking, Surrey.

Diabolik posted one theory on Twitter: “The War of the Worlds (1898), by HG Wells, based in Horsell Common north of Woking, was an early science fiction novel which describes an invasion of England by aliens from Mars. It is one of the earliest and best-known depictions of an alien invasion.”

Another, Joshgjohnson, tweeted: “HG Wells birthday is Sept 21. This is a ‘lead-up’ as was Sept 5th logo.”

In response, Google said: “Some of you figured out what we were doing, but we weren’t ready to reveal it all just yet.”

L’utente Diabolik ha postato una sua teoria su Twitter: “La guerra dei Mondi (1898), di HG Wells, che si svolge a Horsell Common a nord di Woking, è un racconto che narra l’invasione dell’Inghilterra da parte di alieni marziani. E una delle prime e migliori rappresentazioni di una invasione aliena”

Un altro utente, Joshgjohnson, ha scritto “Il compleanno di HG Wells è il 21 settembre. Questo è un altro indizio come lo era il logo del 5 settembre”

In risposta Google ha detto “Alcuni di voi hanno capito cosa stavamo facendo, ma non eravamo ancora pronti a rivelarlo.

“We all have faith in the manager. He has shown in his career, and now, that he makes the right decisions, more than not.

“I think both players have made great cases. Jermain has made the headlines because of his goalscoring.

“I’ve known Jermain since he was 16 years of age and knew he was going to go to the top because he is a natural goalscorer and that doesn’t come around that often.

“Emile has made a great case constantly in the way he has played for England for a very long time.

“So the manager has a great option there for two different styles and it depends on the manager’s decision which way it goes.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Lampard has laughed off the claims from Croatia boss Slaven Bilic, who he was also at West Ham with during the 1996/97 season, that the current England side lack an ‘Englishness’ under Capello.

“I think Slaven is a very clever manager, a clever man, and he is saying things, probably, to get his own team worked up, to get them ready for the game,” said the 31-year-old.

“Maybe it is things to get in our heads. It is very important we don’t let all the talk affect us. We have to concentrate on getting ready for the game and playing.

“Certainly, the way we are playing at the moment, there is a confidence, there is a strength and a spirit in the team.”

When pushed on the subject of ‘Englishness’, he added: “I don’t understand what that means. We are an English team trying to win games. I don’t know what ‘missing Englishness’ means.”

La star del Totthenam Defoe è in forma dopo avere segnato 5 goals nelle ultime 3 partite internazionali e ci sono state richieste per promuovere l’attaccante nell’undici titolare al posto di Heskey.

Lampard, che è stato al West Ham con Defoe all’inizio delle rispettive carrirere, riconosce la forza di entrambi i giocatori, ed è sicuro che Capello prenderà la decisione giusta, dicendo ad una conferenza su Sky Sports News: “La decisione è tutta del’allenatore.

Nel frattempo il centrocampista del Chelsea Lampard ha riso alle dichiarazioni dell’allenatore della Croazia Slaven Bilic che ha detto che la squadra Inglese manca di ‘inglesità’ sotto gli ordini di Capello. Bilic è stato anche lui al West Ham con Lampard nella stagione 1996/97.

Michael Jackson’s secret emails

Michael Jackson had two secret email accounts which investigators believe may have been used to buy prescription drugs.

Detectives have only recently discovered the accounts and will now go through his messages to see if he was in contact with doctors who could have supplied him.

A source close to the investigation told the Mirror: “They could hold vital evidence with regard to Michael’s death and the drugs he was using regularly.

“Not only did he get prescription drugs through a network of doctors, it’s believed he may also have got them from illegal websites or drug cartels. The LAPD has to get a search warrant first and this takes a few days.”

Police are also examining a private mobile phone line used by the singer which was also only discovered recently.

They will investigate whether he used the phone to contact doctors.

Jackson died two months ago at the age of 50 at his rented property in Los Angeles.

Investigators are working on the theory that the singer’s heart stopped hours after he was given a heavy sedative to help him sleep.

Jackson will be buried at Forest Lawn’s Glendale site, around eight miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Since announcing that he is returning to music with a new album later this year, Williams has reportedly been trying to shed the pounds he had gained during his time out of the limelight.

Barack Obama invites race row professor and policeman for a beer

Barack Obama is to host a special boys’ beer night at the White House on Thursday in an attempt to defuse simmering racial tensions over the arrest of a prominent black academic by a white police officer

Henry Louis Gates, a Harvard professor, and James Crowley, the Massachusetts police officer who arrested him after he forced his way into his own home, have been invited to join the US president for a beer on Thursday evening.

The trio have all become embroiled in a row in which Prof Gates alleged he had been a victim of racial discrimination to the anger of police who said the academic had lost his temper and was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Mr Obama, a friend of Prof Gates, became involved after he told a press conference that the police in Cambridge, Massachusetts, had “acted stupidly” in the affair.

As it gradually emerged that he had spoken hastily, the president rang Mr Crowley on Friday to express regret for his choice of words and to invite the pair to the White House for a beer.

The president’s spokesman described the planned meeting as “a chance to talk and a chance to have a dialogue,” adding that the meeting offered a “teachable moment”.

He added: “Weather permitting, they’ll probably sit at the picnic table, behind the Oval Office.”

According to the White House, Mr Crowley has asked for Blue Moon beer, while Mr Obama will be drinking Budweiser. No details have been given about Mr Gates’ beer of choice but, fortunately for the colour theme, he is reported to like Red Stripe, a Jamaican lager.

School closures over flu ‘unlikely’

School closures in the autumn to curb the number of swine flu infections are unlikely at the moment and would have an “extremely disruptive” effect on society, the Chief Medical Officer has said.

Sir Liam Donaldson said the possibility of school closures would be kept under review but in past experience – such as in the West Midlands – this had not been effective at controlling the virus.

He was speaking as ministers were asked to consider closing schools this autumn to help curb the number of swine flu infections.

“I think it would take a lot for us to move in that direction, it would be extremely disruptive to society – when would you open them again, given that flu might be around for several months,” he told GMTV.

“If we look at what we did in the West Midlands for example, where we did very aggressively initially close schools, treat people with Tamiflu who didn’t have symptoms but were contacts of cases, eventually it broke out of the box and spread more widely.

“I think we will obviously keep all of these things under review as we do with any scientific advice, but at the moment I think it is unlikely.”

Amid predictions that the number of cases will soar as the school holidays come to an end, two infection experts have argued that a school closure programme could “break the chains of transmission” and buy time to produce a vaccine.

Professor Neil Ferguson and Dr Simon Cauchemez, from the department of infectious disease epidemiology at Imperial College London, also cited studies showing that closing schools at the height of a flu pandemic could cut the number of cases by up to 45%.

Tra le previsioni di una esplosione dei casi quando finiranno le vacanze scolastiche, due esperti di infezioni hanno argomentato che una chiusura delle scuole potrebbe bloccare la catena di trasmissione e fare guadagnare tempo per produrre un vaccino.

Healthy-looking Boy George salutes freedom as he’s released early from prison

Boy George beamed with delight as he was released early from prison today.

The Eighties pop star offered a Benny Hill-style salute as he left jail after serving only four months of his 15-month sentence for falsely imprisoning a rent boy.

George, who has fought a long battle against drink and drugs, looked much healthier following his stint behind bars.

He appeared to have lost weight and the heavy bags under his eyes, his complexion was much pinker and he’s grown a beard, which is grey but tidily trimmed.

Even more tellingly, the sparkle seems to have returned to his eyes. When photographed before sentencing in January he wore the dead look of a man contemplating a long stretch of porridge.

After leaving Edmunds Hill Prison in Suffolk, George O’Dowd returned to his London home, where he was joined by friends and family eager to celebrate his release.

His brother Kevin O’Dowd arrived carrying a box of groceries to help his brother re-stock his empty house.

On the subject of a possible divorce, she once said: “I could say that I’ve been thinking about it for 10 years, and that I’m slow in taking decisions.” Two years ago she demanded, and received, a public apology after Mr Berlusconi told a former men’s magazine model that he would love to run off with her if he was not already married.

His contrition did not stop him, however, from continuing his political patronage of the young woman, Mara Carfagna, and last year when he was re-elected he made her, apparently without irony, his equal opportunities minister.

The issue exploded again last week, when Miss Lario angrily denounced his party’s consideration of four young actresses and models as European Parliament candidates.

Miss Lario chose to make clear her displeasure in the most public way possibile, sending an email to Italy’s national news agency in which she said she and her children had “suffered” from Mr Berlusconi’s flirtatious and indiscrete behaviour.

La signora Lario, 52 anni, passa molto del suo tempo nella casa di famiglia di Milano, una villa di periferia, oppure viaggiando in America senza il marito.

Evita le apparizioni pubbliche ma ha espresso opinioni marcatamente più liberali rispetto a quelle destrorse del marito, riguardo a questioni come la bioetica e la guerra in Iraq.

Il debole del settantaduenne primo ministro per gli incontri con bellissime giovani donne, modelle ed attrici, lo ha spesso fatto scontrare con la sua attraente moglie, trasformando la loro vita privata in una telenovela pubblica, avidamente seguita dagli italiani.

Riguardo al possibile divorzio, una volta lei dichiarò: “Potrei dire che ci ho pensato per 10 anni, e che sono lenta a prendere decisioni.”. Due anni fa ha domandato ed ottenuto pubbliche scuse dopo che il signor Berlusconi ha detto ad una ex modella di riviste solo per uomini che sarebbe volentieri fuggito con lei se non fosse stato già sposato.

Il rimorso non gli ha comunque impedito di continuare a proteggere la carriera politica della giovane Mara Carfagna, e l’anno scorso quando fu rieletto la fece diventare, apparentemente senza ironia, il suo ministro delle eguali opportunità.

Il problema è esploso ancora la settimana scorsa quando la signora Lario ha denunciato in maniera rabbiosa le preferenze di suo marito per giovani attrici e modelle come candidate per il Parlamento Europeo.

La signora Lario ha scelto di dichiarare apertamente il suo malcontento nel modo più pubblico possibile, mandando una email alle agenzie di stampa italiane nella quale dichiarava che lei ed i suo figli hanno sofferto per il comportamento indiscreto del signor Berlusconi.

Se il divorzio dovesse attuarsi, la signora Lario vorrà assicurare per se e per suoi figli un giusto trattamento. “Vivo e combatto per i miei figli” ha detto recentemente.

Sue Terry, 50, and Sue Poole, 54, were cautioned after being caught with £800 of clothes and groceries from Tesco and Marks & Spencer.

Among the items were said to be girls’ flip flops, leggings, casual shirts, men’s and ladies’ watches, a green track suit and groceries including sweets and pet food.

The two women, who live on the same exclusive street as the £135,000-a-week Chelsea star, were stopped by police as they loaded their car at an out-of-town shopping centre in Weybridge, Surrey.

Police are said to have been stunned when they realised the identity of the two women they had arrested.

‘They seemed at a loss to explain. One said they had no idea why she’d taken sports gear as she didn’t even like wearing the stuff. They seemed shaken up.’

An astonished trolley attendant at the Brooklands Shopping Centre said yesterday: ‘They just walked out with two large trolleys brimming with clothes. Then they were stopped by several security men. I didn’t know what was going on.’

Last night the women were claiming innocence – suggesting there had been a ‘ misunderstanding’. It was not clear what the misunderstanding was. Solicitor Angus McBride, who represents Terry, said his understanding from the women was that they were innocent.

Tra gli oggetti rubati sono stati elencati reggicalze, ciabatte, camicie, orologi da uomo e da donna, una tuta verde e cibarie comprendenti caramelle e cibo per cani.

Le due donne, che vivono nella stessa strada del quartiere esclusivo dove vive la star del Chelsea pagata 135.000 sterline a settimana, sono state fermate dalla polizia mentre caricavano la loro macchina in un centro commerciale fuori città a Weybridge, nel Surrey.

I poliziotti sono stati allertati dallo staff della sicurezza che si sono insospettiti per il loro comportamento.

Le donne sono state arrestate per sospetto di furto e portate alla vicina stazione di polizia di Staines dove hanno firmato un documento che è essenzialmente un’ammissione di colpa.

L’incidente, che è successo alle 3 del pomeriggio di mercoledì, sarà una fonte di imbarazzo per il ventottenne difensore John Terry, che è un simbolo per la squadra nazionale e per la Football Association.

I due supermercati hanno anche interessi nella squadra inglese.

Tesco è il supermarket ufficiale della nazionale e sottolinea con orgoglio sul proprio sito l’importanza del calcio come sport nazionale.

Il direttore esecutivo del supermercato è, Sir Terry Leahy, anche uno dei vicepresidenti per la campagna inglese per ospitare i mondiali del 2018.

I poliziotti hanno dichiarato di essere stati molto sorpresi una volta scoperta l’indentità delle due donne arrestate.

‘Sembravano incapaci di spiegare. Una ha detto che non avevano idea del perchè avesse preso abiti sportivi, e che non le piaceva neppure indossarli. Sembravano molto agitate.’

Uno stupefatto responsabile di carrelli al Brooklands Shopping Centre ha detto ieri:
‘Sono semplicemente camminate fuori con due carrelli pieni di vestiti. Poi sono state fermate da diverse guardie della sicurezza. Non capivo cosa stava succedendo.’

Ieri sera le donne si dichiaravano innocenti – suggerendo che si trattava di un ‘malinteso’. Non è stato chiarito di che malinteso si trattasse. L’avvocato Angus McBride, che rappresenta Terry, ha detto che da quello che ha capito le due donne sono innocenti.

Brown may not need Rihanna’s love to back him in court — according to TMZ, a plea deal for Chris may already be in the works. The “Forever” singer reportedly wants no jail time — and he will reportedly only cop to a misdemeanor charge.

Ani Esmailian from Hollyscoop.com reveals to “Extra” that the couple has been violent with each other before. “It isn’t the first time Chris Brown has fought back and that’s according to Rihanna’s statement,” Ani explains. “According to a source familiar with the case, there was actually an altercation three months ago when the couple was in Europe and it resulted in Rihanna slapping Chris Brown and him having to put her up against the wall to calm her down.”

Brown is due back in court on April 6 for his arraignment.
