Ricky Gervais too funny for Hollywood

“I warned them.” Returning Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais did indeed let it be known that he wasn’t going to hold back in skewering Hollywood’s most famous celebrities. And, in what will undoubtedly be his last hosting gig for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (and, who knows, maybe any Stateside awards) he didn’t disappoint.

.
.
.
But in the process of making searingly funny jokes at more than just the obvious targets (Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, the HFPA itself), the heat he put into the punch lines might have made him more of the story than the actual winners.

.
.
And yet, it made for compelling — if sometimes wince-inducing — television. Given the staid lameness of most awards shows — hello, Emmys — at least he kept those who are not in the industry laughing uproariously. (His “I warned them” line came after a particularly funny joke about Hugh Hefner’s new fiancee, complete with physical comedy and facial expressions).

.
.
.
Gervais’ biting lines were scattered at various stars (and movies like The Tourist), with not everyone taking kindly to the treatment. Bruce Willis seemed miffed to be called the father of Ashton Kutcher, Robert Downey Jr. seemed to take slight umbrage about his rehab past (before going into his own salacious and super speech), etc. Even when the jokes weren’t directed at them, some stars took gentle swipes back, as when Tom Hanks, who just received a rave recitation of his career achievement from Gervais, protected Tim Allen, who received none.

.
.
.
.
.
Gervais’s jokes were so incendiary that when he went missing during the second half of the show, the Twitterverse lit up with suggestions that he’d been fired backstage. Clearly, Gervais had done so much damage entertaining the viewers at home (or appalling them, depending on their belief in decorum), that he became the story of the night.

.
.
.
.
.
But so what? The Globes are considered one of the best, if not the best, awards show on television because of this feeling that anything goes and Champagne-fueled winners and presenters could say just about anything. Adding Gervais into the mix last year was exactly the kind of tone that seemed to fit the primetime party and as funny as he was this year, there’s little doubt many in the industry will think he went too far.

.
.
.
The trouble is, the awards are for the people in the business, but the show itself is for the viewers at home. There’s only so much sycophantic back-slapping anyone can take without a little needling to burst the ego bubble.

.
.
.
But if Gervais wasn’t intending to come back, which is what he’s said prior, he sure went out swinging, thanking all the right people — the HFPA, NBC, the stars in the room for being good sports, then ending with, “And God, for making me an atheist.”

.
.
That pretty much sealed it, one would suspect.

Ricky Gervais troppo divertente per Hollywood

“Li ho avvertiti.”

a ridere fragorosamente.

Seven Britons trapped in snow-covered pub for over a week

Seven people have been trapped inside a pub in Britain for the past nine days after the building was engulfed by 16 feet of snow.

.
Five staff and two residents have been trapped since Nov 26 at The Lion Inn in Blakey Ridge in North Yorkshire, the Daily Mail reported Sunday.

.
The people were cut off when heavy snow blocked the windows and doors of the isolated pub and made its approach roads too treacherous for any vehicles to pass.

.
The snow was so deep that vehicles in the car park were completely buried.

But despite their ordeal, the spirits of the trapped people have remained high. They have kept themselves busy – eating, drinking and playing games – in the bar that normally serves 150 customers a night.

‘It was really novel at first and quite exciting. The snow is immense. Most of the windows in here are blocked up, but we’ve got a door open at the back to get some air when we need to,’ waitress Katie Underwood, 18, said.

‘It’s been freezing, but we’ve been lucky that it’s a pub and B&B (bed and breakfast) we’re trapped in. We’ve got plenty of coal for our fire, which has been great, and there are rooms upstairs so we have somewhere to sleep, and plenty of food.’

Katie is there with colleagues Rob Sinley, 22, Joe Bell, 20, Stuart Dowson, 25, and Danny Butterworth, 23, along with the two local residents.

‘We never imagined it would be for this long. We’ve been having a lot of fun – most nights we’ve been playing Monopoly or another board game, as well as keeping a beverage close by for warmth!’ she said.

Britain is expected to remain wrapped up in freeze and fog until the weekend, weather officials have forecast, as temperatures dropped further, halting air and rail transport across the country and other parts of Europe.

Temperatures plunged to as low as -15 degrees Celsius in some parts of Britain, causing disruptions for motorists and rail and air passengers.

‘All’inizio era tutto nuovoe d eccitante.

After book sells for £7.3m: Top 5 most expensive auction items

.
John James Audubon’s book Birds Of America has caused a right flap, after it was sold for £7.3million at auction. Some of you may be wondering how anything can be so expensive if it hasn’t got diamonds in it. But it’s a funny old world. Here are some more ludicrously pricey auction items.

.
.
.
.
£27m – 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Atlantic
Only three were ever built, which goes some way to explaining why a very wealthy car owner parted with a staggering £27million for this Art Deco coupe.

.
.
£335k – Leica MP2 camera
Someone snapped up this 1958 vintage camera at an auction in Vienna this year for over £300,000. Only six were ever built and this particular one now has a new home with its anonymous Asian owner, who was clearly desperate to buy it, because the asking price was £65,000. And it doesn’t even have a USB input. Or an LCD screen.

.
.
.
.
£88m – Pablo Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves And Bust
May this year saw one of Picasso’s masterpieces auctioned off at Christie’s in New York for £88million. The picture depicts the artist’s mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter asleep naked. So yes, it’s a bit rude, but that’s okay, because it’s art.

.
.
.
£800k – Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’ Dress
When Marilyn Monroe sang Happy Birthday to John F Kennedy on May 19, 1962, she certainly dressed to impress – in this tight jewel-encrusted number. Originally owned by the widow of Monroe’s acting coach, Lee Strasberg, it was sold in 1999 to New York collectible company Gotta Have It!

.
.
£72k – A lock of Elvis’s hair
This hair-raising amount was forked out in 2002 for one of The King’s locks. It turns out that his barber horded the stuff to make a profit at a later date.

Ecco

addormentata nuda.

Royal wedding on April 29 will mean an 11-day holiday… but you only have to take three days off!

Taking three days holiday after Easter will give an 11-day break
Kate’s parents contribute five-figure sum towards the wedding
It’s a long way off but forecast suggests it could be dry and sunny

Britain will enjoy a bank holiday bonanza because of Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton, with back-to-back four-day weekends.

The Prince wants to evoke the memory of his mother by making his marriage on April 29 next year a celebration for the whole nation.

And it will be like a second Christmas break for many because it follows just days after the Easter weekend.

There are just three normal working days between the two Bank Holiday weekends, meaning many could enjoy a break of 11 days if they book the time off in between.

William intends to pack Westminster Abbey with children, volunteers and the homeless in a unique ‘People’s Royal Wedding’.

There will also be street parties and a concert by Britain’s top pop stars.

When Diana’s funeral was held at the Abbey 13 years ago, hundreds of charity workers were there to commemorate her life.

Now courtiers have told the Daily Mail that her eldest son wants a sea of similar faces when he walks down the aisle with his bride.

Yoko Ono Writes Moving Tribute to John Lennon

‘The most important gift we received from him was not words, but deeds’

John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono has written an elegant eulogy for her late husband on her blog.

.
The post, called “The Teamaker,” opens with a memory of the former Beatle teaching his wife how to make tea, and the subsequent realization that he had been doing it wrong all along. “On this day,” she writes, “the day he was assassinated for being a truth seeker and a communicator, what I remember is the night we both cracked up drinking tea.”

.
.
All of Rolling Stone’s John Lennon Coverage

.
Ono continues: “This year would have been the 70th birthday year for John if only he was here. But people are not questioning if he is here or not. They just love him and are keeping him alive with their love. I’ve received notes from all corners of the world to let me know that they were celebrating this year to thank John for having given us so much in his forty short years on earth.

.
.
.
“The most important gift we received from him was not words, but deeds. He believed in Truth, and had dared to speak up. We all knew that he upset certain powerful people with it. But that was John. He couldn’t have been in any other way. If he were here now, I think he would have shouted so we can all hear it. That truth was important. Because without knowing all the truth of what we did, we could not achieve world peace.”

Yoko Ono counts down her favorite John Lennon songs

Ono’s annual December 8 charity concert, Dream Power John Lennon Super Live, took place on Wednesday at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. Fifteen acts performed at the show; its proceeds will fund 12 schools around the world.

avuto luogo mercoledì al Nippon Budokan a Tokyo. Quindici i pezzi eseguiti durante lo spettacolo;
il ricavato finanzierà 12 scuole in tutto il mondo.

La traduzione di un articolo dall'inglese sul ritorno dei Take That

Ecco la traduzione dall’inglese all’italiano di un articolo del Daily Mail che parla del ritorno in scena della celebre Band inglese dei Take That.

Robbie’s going grey, Mark’s forgotten where he parked his car… are Take That REALLY ready for their second comeback?

.
He’s just 36 years old but it seems being in the music industry for the last 20 years has started to take its toll on Robbie Williams.

The singer showed signs of grey hair as he joined his Take That bandmates for an interview at Radio 1 this afternoon following the announcement that the group will be going on tour next year.

With the top of his hair teased into a quiff-style, Robbie appeared to be attempting to hide his silvery locks as he arrived at the studios with Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald.

And Robbie isn’t the only member to have started to show his age, as Mark admitted on Radio 1 this morning that he had forgotten where he parked his car.

.
The 38-year-old singer admitted he had spent 24 hours thinking his car had been stolen before realising he had simply parked it at a friend’s house and forgotten about it.

.
.
He said: ‘I just left it at some friend’s house. We were speaking to the friend and said we lost it – and they never said it’s on our drive!’

.
.
He and the group joined presenter Scott Mills to talk about the tour dates, which were announced at a press conference at London’s Savoy Hotel.

UK snow: it’s going to get worse

The week-long early snowfalls and freezing temperatures – the earliest since 1993 – are set to worsen over the next few days.

The Met Office has severe weather warnings in place for Scotland, the eastern areas of Northern Ireland, the east coast of England down through the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, the East Midlands and Cornwall.

The forecasters now predict the bitter winds will increase and the snow will spread to more areas including London and the South East.

Scotland and the North East have, so far, been worst hit by snow, with more than 40cm falling in some areas. All schools in Dundee, West Lothian and Shetland were closed this morning. Some 200 schools are closed in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham.

Overnight blizzard conditions and jack-knifed lorries forced the closure of the A9 between Dunblane and Perth – one of the busiest roads in Scotland. The road remains closed with some motorists trapped in their cars. A spokesman for Central Scotland Police warned of dangerous conditions on the roads throughout the rest of the force area saying: “Conditions are horrendous and we would urge caution.”

Further south, the M62 between junction 34 and junction 38 in West Yorkshire was described by authorities as “hazardous”, while one of the main routes into the centre of Sheffield – the Parkway – was said to be “treacherous”.

One lane of the eastbound M4 at the Severn Crossing was closed for a while as a precaution after ice started to form on the bridge.

Neve in Gran Bretagna: andrà ancora peggio

Circa 200 scuole sono chiuse a Tyne and Wear, Northumberland e County Durham.

.

Buona lettura!

WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange could spend a year in Britain fighting extradition

.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange could spend at least a year in Britain battling against extradition.

.
The 39-year-old Australian remains behind bars tonight after Swedish prosecutors demanded he be handed over for allegedly sexually assaulting two women.

His legal team, led by leading human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson and backed by celebrity supporters, will make another application for bail when he appears in court next Tuesday.

But the fight may last many months in the British courts and eventually end up before the European Court of Human Rights.

His lawyer Mark Stephens – who has dismissed the extradition bid as politically motivated – had a brief three minute telephone call yesterday to Wandsworth prison, where Mr Assange is being held.

.
He said: ‘He was very upbeat, boosted by the massive support he is receiving and the fact that people are beginning to realise that the honeytrap has been sprung.’

.
‘He is being treated perfectly properly and he very much wants to face down these allegations.’

Mr Assange was refused bail after his arrest, with Swedish authorities arguing that he was likely to fail to answer to conditions imposed to ensure he did not abscond.

But Mr Stephens said: ‘He knew the arrest warrant was coming and he didn’t run away and when it arrived he handed himself into police with nine hours notice.

He is not a man who is running away.

‘He is a man of enormous fortitude who is going to see this out.’

He is wanted in Sweden to answer four charges of sexual assault, which his supporters say are part of a plot against Mr Assange, who has angered the U.S. by publishing huge numbers of secret diplomatic cables.

.
The lawyer for the two Swedish women making the sex crime allegations insisted they are not involved in any politically motivated attack.

.
Speaking in Stockholm, Claes Borgstrom said: ‘It has nothing to with WikiLeaks or the CIA’, adding that it was ‘More than 50/50’ that Sweden would eventually press charges on Mr Assange.

The WikiLeaks founder defended the internet publishing of the U.S. documents, saying it was crucial to spreading democracy and likening himself to a global media magnate in the quest to public the truth.

.
Under an article in an Australian newspaper today headlined ‘Don’t shoot the messenger for revealing uncomfortable truths,’ Mr Assange said WikiLeaks deserves protection, not threats and attacks.

He received backing from Australia’s foreign minister Kevin Rudd, himself described as a mistake-prone control freak in one of the leaked U.S. cables.

.
.
Mr Rudd said : ‘Mr Assange is not himself responsible for the unauthorised release of 250,000 documents from the U.S. diplomatic communications network.

.
‘The Americans are responsible for that.

‘I think there are real questions to be asked about the adequacy of their security systems and the level of access that people have had to that material over a long period of time.’

Mr Assange’s estranged son Daniel, 20, a Melbourne-based software developer, pleaded for his father to be treated ‘fairly and apolitically,’ adding: ‘I’m hoping this isn’t just an intermediary step towards his extradition to the U.S..’

Carlo Ancelotti is refusing to lose his cool

For a man who is supposedly unhappy with his lot at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti chose to smile in the face of adversity ahead of tonight’s Champions League match against MSK Zilina.

His performance at yesterday’s pre-match press conference may be perceived by the cynics as the Italian just trying to put on a brave face in front of the cameras but his relaxed nature also betrayed an inner confidence that the club’s fortunes will turn around.

.
While the nature of assistant coach Ray Wilkins’s departure two weeks ago undoubtedly unsettled him and some senior players, it is the team’s results on the pitch which have given everyone most cause for concern.

Yet the former AC Milan coach does not have to look back very far in his Chelsea career to the last time he was subjected to such scrutiny and still came out on top.

.
.
Eight months ago, speculation over Ancelotti’s future was intense following the club’s defeat by Inter Milan in the last-16 stage of the Champions League and then they dropped two points at Blackburn in the Premier League.

Talk of crisis meetings and owner Roman Abramovich becoming increasingly restless were prevalent. However, a 5-0 rout of Portsmouth at Fratton Park followed, all was forgotten and two months later Chelsea were celebrating winning the Double’ for the first time in their history.

.
.
.
Injuries to key members of the squad have made achieving similar feats this season a lot harder and a lack of confidence is clearly eating away at the players. Abramovich’s tendency to ignore the English expression if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is also a hindrance, not a help.

.
.
.
However, this is why the timing of a match against Slovakian minnows MSK Zilina could not be better.

A few weeks ago it seemed it would be just a glorified exhibition match after Chelsea secured qualification to the knockout phase of the Champions League with two games to spare.

But it has taken on great significance, and not just because Ancelotti’s side still need a point to cement first place in the group.
