Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, believes his side are ready to end Manchester United’s grip on the Premier League title after their emphatic victory over Arsenal.

“I believe we will win the title,” Ancelotti said. “When I signed a contract with Chelsea I believed we’d win something. We started the season believing that we could win. Our objective is to stay in all the competitions until the end of the season and then, if we can win, we will try to do that.

“I prefer to think that they can stay on top of the table, top of the list. It’s not so important for me if Arsenal can return to first position. For me it’s just important that Chelsea continue to play like today, with determination and with concentration.”

Ancelotti also applauded Didier Drogba, whose double stretched Chelsea’s lead over United to five points. But the Italian is confident Chelsea can cope without Drogba when he leaves for the African Cup of Nations in January.

“We played some matches without Drogba in the Champions League and won,” Ancelotti said. “He’s an important player, but today we had Ballack, Malouda, Deco and Kalou on the bench. They are top players who can play in any team. For this I’m not too worried. It was a very good performance. I think that if you win 3-0 at Arsenal, you have to do a good job.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, believes Chelsea’s victory had more to do with luck.

The score is a very unfair reflection of the game but it is the score and we cannot change it now,” he added.

“I believe that Chelsea had absolutely everything for them. The first shot on goal they scored and the second cross they scored. And after that it was difficult.

“They are physically strong players, but that is the impression you get when they are 2-0 up. They just defended in their own half and attacked on the break. They lost many balls and made many technical mistakes but we couldn’t take advantage.”

Ancelotti ha anche applaudito Didier Drogba, la cui doppietta ha aumentato il vantaggio del Chelsea sullo United a 5 punti. Ma l’Italiano è sicuro che il Chelsea può arrangiarsi anche senza Drogba quando a gennaio andrà a partcipare alla coppa d’Africa.

“Abbiamo giocato alcune partite senza Drogba in Champions League e abbiamo vinto” ha detto Ancelotti. “E’ un giocatore importante, ma oggi abbiamo Ballack, Malouda, Deco e Kalou in panchina. Sono giocatori di alto livello che possono giocare con qualsiasi squadra. Per questo non sono tanto preoccupato. E’ stata una bella partita. Penso che per battere 3-0 l’Arsenal devi fare un buon lavoro.”

L’allenatore dell’Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, nel frattempo, crede che la vittoria del Chelsea abbia più avuto a che fare con la fortuna.

British engineers have started to build what they hope will be the world’s fastest car, the Bloodhound, capable of reaching 1,000mph and breaking the land speed record.

The British team behind the venture have announced that the design for the Bloodhound SSC (Supersonic car) had now been sorted out, with a jet engine from the Eurofighter Typhoon being positioned above the prototype hybrid rocket.

The record attempt will begin with runs on a flat, dried-up lake bed at Hakskeen Pan in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province in 2011.

The car is being driven by Wing Commander Andy Green, who broke the world land speed record by achieving a speed of 763mph in Thrust SSC in 1997.

The Bloodhound project, based in Bristol, is designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The car has gone through 10 design evolutions since work started on it and the building of the vehicle will now commence at a site in Bristol Docklands next door to the SS Great Britain ship and called the ”Dog House”.

The hybrid rocket is the largest ever designed in the UK – weighing 400kg and being 14ft long.

With the EJ200 jet engine, the rocket will give the car a thrust equivalent to the power of 180 Formula One cars.

The first prototype rocket has already been successfully fired in California’s Mojave desert.

The Bloodhound team have spent some time looking for a perfect location for the record attempt, with 35 sites making into on to the short list.

Verneuk Pan in South Africa, scene of an unsuccessful bid for the land speed record by Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1929 was favoured at one time, but had a stone-littered surface.

Eventually, Hakskeen Pan was chosen. It has a relatively debris-free surface and is 12 miles long, although a dirt track which crosses the run area will have to be removed.

The 10 worst train stations in Britain are set to undergo a 50 million pound makeover, the government said on Tuesday.

They were identified in a report by “Station Champions” who had travelled the country to see where urgent action was needed.

They found the worst stations were: Clapham Junction, Barking, Stockport, Manchester Victoria, Preston, Wigan North Western, Liverpool Central, Warrington Bank Quay, Crewe and Luton.

“While touring the rail network in April this year, I was struck by the great variation in the passenger facilities at stations,” said Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis.

“Train travel has improved a good deal in recent years, but more needs to be done to improve conditions and services for passengers at stations.”

Last week, Network Rail said more than 3 billion pounds would be spent over the next five years to improve thousands of stations with new information systems, toilets, better lighting, and refurbished ticket halls.

Adonis said he agreed with the Champions’ recommendation that there should be a minimum standard for all stations on issues such as providing information and car and bike parking facilities.

“Stations are deeply entwined with their local community and effectively act as the gateway to both town and railway,” the Station Champions’ report said.

“They leave passengers with their lasting impressions of both — a dilapidated station is bad business for both town and railway.”

Anthony Smith, chief executive of watchdog Passenger Focus, said passengers at small stations had waited too long for access to information about services.

“Passengers standing on windswept platforms across Britain should be able to find out if their train is coming or not,” he said.

“There are all too many stations that do not have any real-time information and in the 21st century this is outrageous.”

The watchdog said passenger satisfaction was heavily dependent on station size, with those using small, unstaffed stations the most unhappy.

“Le stazioni sono profondamente legate alla comunità locale e sono la porta d’ingresso per la città e per la ferrovia” dice il rapporto dei Difensori delle Stazioni.

“Lasciano ai passeggeri impressioni durature – una stazione cadente è un brutto affare sia per la città che per le ferrovie”

Anthony Smith, presidente dell’Osservatorio sui Passeggersi, ha detto che i passeggeri delle stazioni minori hanno aspettato troppo a lungo per accedere alle informazioni che riguardano i servizi.

SWINDON is to become the first town in Britain to provide free internet access, it was revealed today.

The £1million scheme will cover the area’s 186,000 population in a “WiFi mesh” allowing easy online access.

Users will be able to log on anywhere in the town — accessing the internet and e-mail accounts free of charge.

The project — which is the brainchild of Swindon Borough Council — will be funded by a mixture of public and private money.

But it is hoped it will soon break into profit by offering residents the chance to upgrade to a faster service.

The Wi-Fi project will be run by Digital City UK Ltd, of which Swindon Borough Council has a 35 per cent share.

Rod Bluh, Swindon Borough Council Leader, said: “This is a truly groundbreaking partnership which will have real benefits for everyone living in Swindon.

“Not only will residents in the Borough be able to access the internet for free, the Council and its partners will be able to use the technology to provide cutting edge services to the areas or individuals who need them.

Sir Alex Ferguson raged against refereeing decisions, again, after the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea. Was he justified?

On this occasion, he probably was. There were four or five instances when Manchester United could have been given the benefit of the doubt by Martin Atkinson, but all of the decisions went in favour of Chelsea. Did Darren Fletcher foul Ashley Cole? Possibly not. Did Didier Drogba grab at Wes Brown? Maybe. Was Drogba offside and interfering with play? Perhaps.

So Ferguson, for once, had good cause to rant?

Yes. Whatever you think of his history in this respect – and, of course, people have heard it all before many times – it was deeply frustrating for him. He was entitled to be aggrieved, he was entitled to feel a huge sense of injustice. United may have had matters go their way in many games over the years, but not on Sunday.

Still, isn’t it all becoming a bit tiring?

Yes, it has reached the stage where Sir Alex must be sick of criticising referees. The public, the officials and the FA must be sick of it, too. It does, though, illustrate his huge and enduring passion for the game, even though, at times, this can spill over into an unedifying tirade at the match officials.

It appears that the FA will let him off on this one?

It’s not surprising. He did not slaughter Atkinson, his comments never got personal or cast doubts over the integrity of the referee. When Ferguson laid into Alan Wiley and questioned his fitness, he went over the top. The charge of improper conduct was deserved.

Is not all this ranting just a way of masking United’s deficiences?

Ferguson can be clever like that. Over the seasons, a United defeat or poor display has often been followed by an outburst at the referee. He likes to deflect the issue, keeping his real thoughts for the dressing-room and training ground. He is the master at that and, because of it, gains the respect of his players. On Sunday, United played reasonably well. Ferguson’s dismay was genuine and justified.

But are United playing well?

Not badly, but there is a distinct lack of penetration, which was half-expected once Cristiano Ronaldo left. A total of 23 goals in 12 matches is OK but United still lag way behind Chelsea and Arsenal in the goalscoring stakes. They have to up that significantly … and quickly.

Is the five-point gap to Chelsea worrying?

Only marginally. It’s not insurmountable by any means. United will continue to pick up victories but it would nice to see them back to their scintillating best. “Winning ugly” just doesn’t suit them.

Nokia is recalling some phone chargers because they risk giving users an electric shock.

The company is offering to exchange certain chargers as a precaution.

The Finnish mobile phone giant said it has a programme to change a limited number of Nokia-branded chargers manufactured by a third party supplier.

“We have determined that the plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electric shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket,” said Nokia.

The affected chargers are those manufactured by BYD between 15 June 2009 and 9 August 2009, with the AC-3U and AC-3E models and those manufactured by BYD between 13 April 2009 and 25 October 2009 and with the model type AC-4U, said a Nokia statement.

“The reliability and quality of our products is Nokia’s top priority. If you have confirmed that your charger is eligible to be replaced, we advise that you stop using it and seek a free replacement charger,” said Nokia.

David Cameron has promised to change the law so that no further powers could be transferred to Brussels without the approval of the British people in a referendum.

The Tory leader acknowledged that his campaign for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty was over after it was signed by all 27 members of the European Union.

But he went on: “We will make sure that this never, ever happens again.”

He added: “Never again should it be possible for a British government to transfer power to the European Union without the say of the British people in a referendum.”

Mr Cameron said that the Tories’ campaign for a UK referendum on the Lisbon Treaty was over after the Czech Republic became the final EU member state to sign the document on Tuesday.

“It’s no longer a treaty, it’s been incorporated into EU law,” he said, adding that the new posts of president and foreign minister were now being created.

“We cannot hold a referendum and magically make those posts or the Lisbon Treaty itself disappear, any more than we could hold a referendum to stop the sun rising in the morning,” he went on.

He said that people would “resent” the fact that there would not be the referendum that was promised by Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

A Conservative government would amend the European Communities Act 1972 to prohibit the transfer of power to the EU without a referendum. That would cover any future attempt to take Britain into the European single currency, he said.

“We will give the British people a referendum lock to which only they should hold the key, a commitment very similar to that which exists in Ireland,” Mr Cameron added. “This is a major constitutional development, but I believe it’s now the only way to reassure the British people that powers cannot be given away without their explicit approval in a referendum.”

Music enthusiasts can now have a chance at savouring their favourite Beatles music in digital format, with their collection of 14 studio albums being made available on a USB drive from the official Beatles store.

The music will be available in an apple shape USB pen drive and it will feature the tracks in 320Kbps MP3 high quality format along with 24 bit FLAC format.

The drive which goes on sale on 7th December, which incidentally is priced at £200, will also include artwork and 13 mini documentaries which will allow fans to relieve the nostalgic moments associated with the fab four.

Only 30,000 units of the limited edition USB drives will be made available for purchase and interested buyers would have to get themselves registered with the official Beatles store to get a chance at purchasing the drive.

It is interesting to note that the music from The Beatles is officially not available at any major online music store including iTunes and the only place where it is available is Bluebeat.com in the US which is termed by many as a case of unauthorised sale and it may soon face legal action from record label EMI.

AROUND 100 people have been rescued from flooded-out properties in Huntly and a further 50 from Stonehaven after heavy rainfall caused flash flooding across the North East.

The householders, many of whom were elderly, were taken to a nearby care centre after the River Deveron burst its banks this morning.

Eight teams of firefighters and a specialist flood team have been at the location helping to carry people out of riverside homes.

A spokesman said: “I think most of the people have been rescued, but all the crews are searching properties to make sure no-one is trapped.”

No injuries have so far been reported, he added.

Raymond Strachan, 55, who has lived in Huntly for more than 12 years, said flooding had destroyed his caravan and Mitsubishi Warrior 4×4 car.

Speaking outside his home in Sycamore Place, he said: “Everything is destroyed on the ground floor. There was between 4.5ft and 5ft of water inside the house.

“There is still 2ft to 3ft feet of water in the house so I haven’t started cleaning up yet.

“I’ve never seen flooding like this before. It was a torrent. The water rose quickly within half an hour and continued for more than two hours.”

Mr Strachan said he called on neighbours to alert them to the flooding last night.

He said: “I phoned the emergency services at around 1am but I was not the only one who had called by then. Then myself and two other guys started calling on people to make them aware.

“Some people have been left with no clothes whatsoever.

“My own mother, who lives nearby, has been taken to hospital with a suspected heart attack.”

Mr Strachan said he estimated the cost of the damage to his property would be between £10,000 and £15,000.

Otto squadre di vigili del fuoco ed una squadra di specialisti di allagamento sono arrivati sul luogo per aiutare a trasportare la gente fuori dalle case a fianco del fiume.

Un portavoce ha detto: “Penso che gran parte della gente sia stata soccorsa, ma tutte le squadre stanno cercando le abitazioni per essere sicuri che nessuno sia intrappolato”

Non c’è stato nessun ferito finora, ha aggiunto.

Raymond Strachan, di cinquantacinque anni, che ha vissuto per più di 12 anni, ha detto che l’allagamento ha distrutto il suo caravan e la sua macchina Mitsubishi Warrior 4×4.

Parlando da fuori della sua abitazione a Sycamore Place, ha detto: “Al piano terra è tutto distrutto. C’erano tra 130 a 150 cm d’acqua dentro casa.

“Ci sono ancora tra i 60 ed i 90 cm di acqua in casa così non ho ancora cominciato a pulire”

“Non ho mai visto un allagamento così prima. Era un torrente. L’acqua si è alzata velocemente in mezz’ora ed è continuata ad alzarsi per più di 2 ore”

Il signor Strachan ha detto che ha chiamato i vicini per allertarli dell’alluvione ieri sera.

Ha detto “Ho chiamato i servizi di emergenza attorno all’una di notte ma non sono stato l’unico a chiamarli. Poi io e due altri tipi abbiamo cominciato a chiamare la gente per avvertirli.

“Alcune persone sono rimaste senza alcun vestito”

“Mia madre, che abita vicino, è stata portata in ospedale per un sospetto attacco di cuore”

Il signor Strachan ha detto che il costo stimato dei danni alla sua abitazione sarebbe tra le 10000 e le 15000 sterline.

The Guardian newspaper’s jobs website has warned 500,000 users that hackers may have got hold of private information held on the site after a “sophisticated and deliberate” attack.

The paper said not all users were at risk, and it has emailed those who are. The email, sent on Saturday, said data relating to job applications “may have been accessed”. It said the incident was now being investigated by the central e-crime unit at New Scotland Yard.

The mail advised people to:

1) Contact your creditors, even if they have not been affected, so that they can monitor your accounts to ensure they remain protected.

2) Contact a credit reference agency: Callcredit, Equifax or Experian provide suggested steps to resolve the situation and prevent it happening again.

3) Contact CIFAS protective registration: If you think you have been a victim of identity theft you should consider subscribing to CIFAS. This places a notice on your credit file indicating that your name and address may be used to perpetrate identity fraud.

It also provided links to various websites for further advice on identity fraud.

The paper said it had been assured by its provider, Madgex, that the site was now secure and that it had contacted, or tried to contact, everyone at risk.

The US version of the site was not affected. The paper declined to give any technical details of the attack until the police investigation was over.

Although no financial information is believed to have been lost, even a standard CV and covering letter can provide a decent start for identity theft.

Hackers have previously gone after recruitment sites like Monster.com to harvest data for ID fraud or for “spear phishing attacks” – personalised email scams.

Dopo un attacco sofisticato e deliberato il sito internet dedicato al lavoro del Guardian ha avvertito 500.000 utenti che i pirati informatici potrebbero essere in possesso di informazioni private conservate sul sito.

Il giornale ha detto che non tutti gli utenti sono a rischio, e ha spedito emails a quelli che lo sono. L’email, spedita sabato, diceva che i dati relativi alle richieste di lavoro “potrebbero essere stati visti”. Diceva che l’incidente è sotto investigazione da parte dell’unità centrale del crimine elettronico di Scotland Yard.

La email avvisava le persone di:

1) Contattare i propri creditori, anche se se immuni dall’attacco, così che essi possano monitorare i conti per assicurare che restino protetti

2) Contattare una agenzia di riferimento per il credito: Callcredit, Equifax o Experian forniscono soluzioni consigliate per risolvere la situazione ed impedire che succeda ancora

3) Contattare il programma di registrazione protettiva della CIFAS: se pensate di essere stata una vittima di furto di identità dovreste considerare una iscrizione alla CIFAS. Questo inserisce un avvertimento sul vostro archivio di credito indicando che il vostro nome ed indirizzo potrebbero essere usati per perpretrare frodi di identità.

Fornisce anche link a vari siti internet per avere ulteriore consulenza sulla forde di identità.

Il giornale ha detto di essere stato rassicurato dal proprio provider, Madgex, che il sito è ora sicuro e che tutte le persone a rischio sono state contattate, o si è cercato di contattarle.

Anche se si crede che nessuna informazione finanziaria sia andata persa, anche uno standard Curriculum Vitae può fornire un buon punto di partenza per il furto di identità.

I pirati informatici precedentemente hanno attaccato i siti di ricerca di lavoro come Monster.com per raccogliere dati per frodi di identità per attacchi di ‘phishing’, cioè imbrogli tramite email personalizzate.
