Luton’s silk industry may be thriving, but on the radio, there are reports of wildfires raging across the Yorkshire moors. Hospitals are overflowing with elderly victims of the heat wave, some stricken with tropical diseases.

It may sound far-fetched but it is one possible future as laid out yesterday by the Met Office, where Britain is still recognisable — but only just.

Across the Home Counties, the rolling lawns and herbaceous borders have been edged aside by palms and pistachio trees.

To the west and north, recurrent winter flooding and erosion have left whole swaths of the Severn Estuary and Norfolk virtually abandoned but for a few hardy souls.

UK Climate Projections 2009 from the Met Office is packed with caveats about the uncertainties of the science and the probability of the different scenarios presented. Nevertheless, the message is clear. Without concerted action to tackle climate change, Britain is facing a much hotter, wetter future in which volatile and intense weather will be increasingly frequent, with wideranging implications for ordinary people, business and government.

The European Union wants average global temperatures not to exceed 2C above pre-industrial levels, but the report raised serious questions about the chances of that target being met, at least in Britain.

Yesterday scientists expressed guarded support for the study.

“Whichever way you look at it this report represents the best-informed view of what the future might be like,” said Bob Spicer, Professor of Earth Sciences at the Open University. “To ignore it, and encourage others to ignore it, and refuse to take wise preparatory action, is to invite misery for those who are likely to be adversely affected.”

Paul Williams, climate scientist at the University of Reading, said: “Sceptics will no doubt question how scientists can confidently predict the climate of 2080, when we cannot even forecast next week’s weather with any skill. But climate prediction and weather forecasting are completely different problems.”

Siamo nell’agosto 2084 ed nei boschetti di olive del Bedfordshire, la temperatura ha appena raggiunto i 41 gradi per il quarto giorno consecutivo.

L’industria della seta di Luton starà anche prosperando, ma alla radio vengono trasmesse notizie di incendi che stanno infuriando sulle brughiere dello Yorkshire.
I posti negli ospedali sono tutti occupati da anziane vittime dell’onda di calore, alcune colpite da malattie tropicali.

Potrebbe sembrare esagerato ma è un possibile futuro, prospettato dal dipartimento Meteo ieri, in cui la Gran Bretagna è ancora riconoscibile - ma proprio appena.

Attraverso le Contee, i campi ed i prati sono stati lentamente rimpiazzati da palme e alberi di pistacchio.

All’ovest ed al nord, l’erosione e le inondazioni ricorrenti hanno lasciato intere aree attorno all’estuario del fiume Severn e del Norfolk virtualmente abbandonate, tranne che per poche anime tenaci.

Le proiezioni sui cambiamenti climatici dell’ufficio Meteorologico sono riempite di avvertimenti su come gli scenari presentati non siano sicuri e sulle loro probabilità di avverarsi.
Tuttavia il messaggio è chiaro.
Senza una azione concertata per affrontare i cambiamenti climatici la Gran Bretagna sta per affacciarsi su un futuro molto più caldo e più umido nel quale condizioni meteorologiche incostanti ed estreme saranno sempre più frequenti, con ampie conseguenze per la gente comune, gli affari ed il governo.

L’Unione Europea vorrebbe una temperatura media globale che non ecceda di più di due gradi quella dei livelli preindustriali, ma ci sono seri dubbi se quell’obiettivo possa essere raggiunto, almeno in Gran Bretagna.

Ieri gli scienziati hanno espresso un cauto supporto alla ricerca.

“In qualsiasi modo lo si guardi questo rapporto rappresenta la ricostruzione più attendibile di come possa essere il futuro” ha detto il professor Bob Spicer, cattedra di Scienze Ambientali alla Open University. “Ignorarlo ed incoraggiare altri ad ignorarlo, e rifiutarsi di programmare saggiamente una reazione, significa accettare conseguenze molto negative per coloro che saranno colpiti.”

Paul Williams, studioso del clima alla Università di reading, ha detto:
“Gli scettici metteranno in dubbio la possibilità degli scienziati di prevedere il clima del 2080 quando non riusciamo neanche a prevedere il clima della settimana prossima. Ma le previsioni del tempo e le previsioni climatiche sono problemi completamente differenti.

Record crowds at Stonehenge for summer solstice celebrations

Druids began their incantations, Wiccan priestesses drew their cowls tight against the damp morning air and four half-naked Papuan dancers waved their hands in the air and went: “Woo, woo, woo”.

Only the guest of honour failed to put in an appearance at Stonehenge.

A record 36,500 people had gathered at the prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain to watch the sun rise. So many turned out to celebrate the solstice that roads had to be shut and the vast field converted into a car park for 6,500 vehicles was full by 3am.

Disappointingly, despite a promising forecast, the sun was unable to break through the thin layer of grey cloud that shrouded the ceremony. But most people did not let that spoil their enjoyment.

The crowds had dispersed by the time it was fully light, revealing the bodies of those who had had too much fun, or had simply had enough, slumbering gently on the grass.

Solstice celebrations have become a summer staple, alongside Wimbledon, Glastonbury and the annual gathering of public school pupils in Rock in Cornwall, at the end of the exams.

Despite the complete lack of entertainment, the less than one in ten chance of seeing the sun and the incessant bongo playing, the solstice has attracted larger numbers every year since the stones were reopened to the public in 2000.

Dave Batchelor, English Heritage’s Stonehenge-based archaeologist, said: “We were expecting a large turnout because of the forecast and the fact it falls on a weekend this year so more people can get here.

“We got the maximum number we had planned for so the infrastructure was able to cope.”

In normal circumstances it is not permitted to approach within spitting distance of the stones. But at solstice, the barriers come down. By 3am, the inner circle was so tightly packed that people could be seen struggling to lift their beer cans to their lips.

Sensibly, the druids held their ceremony beside the heel stone, a leaning monolithic a few dozen yards from the main stone circle. Rollo Maughling, the white-haired, white-robed archdruid of Stonehenge, started the ceremonies in an elegant straw hat.

A Stonehenge è mancato solamente l’ospite d’onore.

Una folla record di 36500 persone si è radunata al monumento preistorico della piana di Salisbury per guardare il sorgere del sole. Si sono presentati in così tanti per celebrare il solstizio che alcuine strade sono state chiuse ed il grande campo convertito in un parcheggio per 6500 macchine, che alle 3 del mattino era già esaurito.

Purtroppo, nonostante le previsioni favorevoli, il sole non è riuscito a passare attraverso il sottile strato di nuvole grigie che ha avvolto la cerimonia. Ma la maggior parte della gente si è divertita lo stesso.

Alla piena luce del mattino la folla si era già dispersa, e sui prati rimanevano i corpi di che si era divertito troppo o semplicemente ne aveva abbastanza.

Le celebrazioni del solstizio sono diventate un prodotto estivo e si tengono anche a Wimbledon, Glastonbury ed a Rock in Cornovaglia dove si tiene la riunione annuale degli studenti della scuola pubblica.

Nonostante la totale mancanza di attrazioni, la possibilità di uno su dieci di poter vedere il sole e l’incessante suono dei bonghi, il solstizio ha attratto più visitatori ad ogni anno da quando il luogo è stato riaperto al pubblico nel 2000.

Dave Batchelor, archeologo della conservazione dei beni culturali inglesi ha detto: “Ci aspettavamo molta gente a causa delle previsioni e per il fatto che si tratta di un fine settimana quest’anno, così molta gente è potuta venire”,

“Abbiamo avuto il numero massimo di visitatori che avevamo previsto e l’infrastruttura ha retto”.

In normali circostanze non è permesso avvicinarsi ad i massi. Ma al solstizio le barriere vengono tolte. Alle 3 di notte, il cerchio più interno era così affollato che le persone non riuscivano ad alzare le lattine di birra alle loro labbra.

Intelligentemente, i druidi hanno tenuto la loro cerimonia a fianco della pietra-tallone, un monolite piegato che si trova a qualche decina di metri dal circolo di pietre principale.

PlayStations pose prison security risk

A UK prison has banned inmates from using PS3s amid fears that their Wi-Fi capabilities could be exploited to organise escape attempts.

According to The Guardian, prisoners at the Rye Hill prison in Warwickshire had been using their PlayStations to communicate with people on the outside.

Wardens at the prison claim that this poses a “significant risk” to security and have subsequently confiscated all Sony’s machines from inmates.

“PlayStation 3 consoles are barred on the grounds that they have the capability to send and receive radio signals as an integral part of the equipment,” said a spokesman from the prison service.

Susan Boyle pulls out of Britain’s Got Talent tour dates

Susan Boyle’s fledgling singing career hit another bump yesterday when she pulled out of two Britain’s Got Talent Live tour dates.

The 48-year-old Scot was due on stage for a matinee and evening show at the Manchester MEN Arena but concert-goers arrived to find the venue adorned with notices announcing her withdrawal.

A spokesperson for the church volunteer, who was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after coming second on the ITV talent show, said that after performances in Birmingham and Sheffield she had been advised to withdraw from the Manchester concerts.

“Following three sensational performances, Susan Boyle has been advised to rest.

“She sends her sincere apologies to her fans for not appearing in Manchester.”

Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern was met with boos when he introduced a video clip of the church volunteer’s rapid rise from TV show contestant to global star in place of her performance.

While the Manchester audience were offered refunds if they chose not to watch the show, other tour ticket holders are hoping they could still see Boyle live.

The singer’s spokesperson said Boyle had not ruled out returning to the 21-date tour of the UK and that she hoped to perform tonight in her home country at Glasgow SECC.

She was greeted warmly by the audience at the tour’s opening night in Birmingham on Friday and received a standing ovation in Sheffield on Saturday despite stumbling on her words.

Two weeks ago it looked unlikely Boyle would make any appearances on the tour after she was taken by ambulance, and with police escort, to private London hospital The Priory suffering from exhaustion.

Her illness is widely believed to be the result of her sudden fame and the media and Britian’s Got Talent producers have faced wide-spread criticism.

She left the clinic after five days but remains under the care of doctors.

La qurantottenne scozzese avrebbe dovuto salire sul palco per un concerto pomeridiano e serale alla Manchester MEN Arena ma il pubblico ha solamente trovato il locale addobbato di menifesti che ne annunciavano il ritiro.

Un portavoce della volontaria parrocchiale, che era stata ricoverata in un ospedale psichiatrico dopo essere arrivata seconda nello spettacoli dei talenti di ITV, ha detto che dopo le esibizioni di Birmingham e Sheffield è stata consigliata di ritirarsi dai concerti di Manchester.

“A seguito di tre sensazionali concerti,a Susan Boyle è stato consigliato di riposare.

“Ha chiesto sinceramente scusa ai suoi fans per non essersi esibita a Manchester”

Healthy-looking Boy George salutes freedom as he’s released early from prison

Boy George beamed with delight as he was released early from prison today.

The Eighties pop star offered a Benny Hill-style salute as he left jail after serving only four months of his 15-month sentence for falsely imprisoning a rent boy.

George, who has fought a long battle against drink and drugs, looked much healthier following his stint behind bars.

He appeared to have lost weight and the heavy bags under his eyes, his complexion was much pinker and he’s grown a beard, which is grey but tidily trimmed.

Even more tellingly, the sparkle seems to have returned to his eyes. When photographed before sentencing in January he wore the dead look of a man contemplating a long stretch of porridge.

After leaving Edmunds Hill Prison in Suffolk, George O’Dowd returned to his London home, where he was joined by friends and family eager to celebrate his release.

His brother Kevin O’Dowd arrived carrying a box of groceries to help his brother re-stock his empty house.

George, che ha combattuto una lunga battaglia contro la droga e l’alcol, è sembrato in buona salute dopo il suo periodo dietro le sbarre.

Sembra aver perso peso e le sue profonde occhiaie sono scomparse, la sua carnagione è molto più rosea e si è fatto crescere la barba, che è grigia ma ordinata.

La realtà di una partita che si è giocata solamente da un lato impone una scomoda revisione della pretesa del Manchester UNited di stare nella lista dei potenti del calcio.
In questo spettacolo non sono nella stessa categoria del Barcellona. Nessuno lo è.

Sir Alex Ferguson aveva la faccia di un pugile che si è preso un colpo pesante al primo round e non si è più ripreso. Ed in effetti questo è successo alla sua squadra.

Questa non è stata la sua serata migliore e dovrebbe pensarci bene prima di zittire un giornalista che ha avuto l’ardire di fargli una domanda che non gradiva.

Il giornalista aveva domandato come una persona famosa per i suoi veloci tempi di recupero potesse riprendersi da una sconfitta del genere. Ferguson ha dato un colpo all’ l’asciugacapelli ed ha reagito dicendo: “da quanto tempo mi conosci? è una dannata stupida domanda!”.

Il rimprovero ha comunque dato una riposta alla domanda. E’ proprio arrabbiato. Il suo umore peggiorerà e poi tornerà buono. Si sveglierà durante la notte sognando una miriade di Messi che scartano i suoi giocatori.

Questo è stato un ritorno alla realtà di quelli profondi. Comunque va a suo merito il fatto che non ha tirato fuori nessuna scusa ed ha reso omaggio ai vincitori. Ha vinto la squadra migliore, ha detto. In realtà hanno fatto di meglio: il Barcellona ha fatto sembrare i campioni d’Inghilterra lo Stoke-on-Trent.

Lo united non aveva nessuna contromossa per l’artistico possesso di palla che sposta la capitale del calcio mille miglia a sud di Manchester.

Dove stava la scintillante precisione della aristocrazia Mancuniana, così evidente nei campi inglesi? Sepolta profondamente dai triangoli della Catalonia.

La magia geometrica del Barcellona ha soffocato le aspirazioni dello United nonostante un’avventuroso inizio nel quale Ji-Sung Park avrebbe potuto capitalizzare quando a Victor Valdes era scappato via il tiro di Ronaldo.

QUesta era una partita per decidere non solo i campioni d’Europa ma oer stabilire i diritti per brillare in eterno nel calcio, per definire il massimo della sua estetica. Ed è un peccato che una squadra costruita attorno a principi di attacco non meno robusti di quelli del Barcellona sia stata tradita da una selezione prudente.

Si potrebbe opinare che il Manchester United che vediamo nei sabati pomeriggio non si è visto fino al momento in cuk Carlos Tevez è stato schierato nel secondo tempo. Peccato perchè la prudenza di Ferguson ha impedito alla partita di essere spettacolare come tutti volevamo. Cristiano Ronaldo non può vincere le coppe europee da solo, anche se ci ha provato duramente mercoledì sera. Ci vogliono due squadre per ballare. Una squadra ha osato per vincere, l’altra era troppo preoccupata di perdere.

Il Barcellona ha meritato di vincere la Coppa Europea per la terza volta perchè ha creduto ai suoi principi. Lo United li ha cambiati ed ha pagato il prezzo con la prima sconfitta in una finale Europea.

Youtube Helps Husband Deliver Wife’s Baby

Google’s online video service, Youtube, was instrumental in helping a father deliver his son, showing how powerful web-based videos can be in case of emergencies.

Speaking to the BBC, proud father Marc Stephens of Redruth Cornwall, said candidly that he searched for “how to deliver a baby” on Google. He watched the first few videos - including one that shows how to deliver a baby in a cab - which came up during the search (incidentally from Youtube) as a precautionary measure.

Mr Stephens said that he didn’t have time to panic - partly because of his Navy training - when she started to complain of pain three weeks before the baby was due and he was told the ambulances were held up. Because he knew that his wife has had a history of fast births with their previous three children, he did not take any risks and acted quickly and promptly.

Baby Gabriel was born four hours later and the Royal Navy Engineer later let the paramedics in to take over. The whole family was back home, safe and sound within a few hours. Mr Stephens said that “The videos gave me peace of mind. I think I would have coped, but watching videos made things much easier.”

Youtube aiuta un marito a fare partorire sua moglie

Il servizio di video online di Google, Youtube, è stato utilizzato per aiutare un padre a fare nascere suo figlio, mostrando quanto potenti possono essere i video sul web in caso di emergenze.

Parlando alla BBC, il fiero padre Marc Stephens di Redruth in Cornovaglia, ha detto candidamente che ha cercato “come far partorire” su Google. Ha guardato i primi pochi video - incluso quello che mostra come fare partorire in un taxi - che sono risultati dalla sua ricerca (precisamente su Youtube) come precauzione.

Il signor Stephens ha detto di non avere avuto il tempo di andare in panico - anche per merito del suo addestramento in marina - quando la donna ha cominciato a sentire le doglie con tre settimane di anticipo e le ambulanze erano bloccate.
Dato che sapeva che sua moglie aveva in passato dato nascita molto velocemente ai loro tre figli precedenti, non ha voluto rischiare ed ha agito velocemente.

Il bambino Gabriel è nato 4 ore dopo e l’ingegnere della Marina Reale ha poi lasciato il posto ai paramedici. L’intera famiglia è tornata casa, in perfetta salute entro poche ore. Il signor Stephens ha dichiarato: ‘I video mi hanno dato tranquillità. Penso che ce l’avrei fatta lo stesso, ma guardare i video ha reso le cose molto più facili’.

Didier Drogba should not be punished for his behaviour at the end of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink said on Sunday.
Chelsea’s Ivorian striker went berserk after the 1-1 second-leg draw which knocked Chelsea out, screaming at a television camera, and could face the wrath of UEFA’s disciplinary panel.
Drogba apologised for haranguing Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo and his foul-mouthed rant at the pitchside camera.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen regarding that but I cannot imagine that people who are in charge at UEFA, if they are football people and not beuracratic authorites, will not perfectly understand that the apology of his was Okay,” Hiddink told reporters after his side won 4-1 at Arsenal on Sunday.
“I don’t expect much from that, it would be curious I think.”
Earlier on Sunday, UEFA’s general secretary David Taylor said Drogba’s behaviour had not been a pleasant sight and that it flew in the face of the respect campaigns championed by UEFA and the English FA.
UEFA appear in no rush to hand out punishments to Drogba with Taylor saying the ruling body would collect all the evidence first.

“We expect to take action in terms of instigating some disciplinary proceedings but as to the nature and extent of that, we have to collect all the evidence first before we decide on what that is,” Taylor told BBC Radio Five.

Hiddink dice che la UEFA dovrebbe accettare le scuse di Drogba

L’allenatore del Chelsea, Guus Hiddink, ha detto domenica che Didier Drogba non dovrebbe essere punito per il suo comportamento alla fine della partita di semifinale di Champions League contro il Barcellona.
L’attaccante ivoriano del Chelsea si è indemoniato dopo il pareggio di ritorno per 1-1 che ha sbattuto fuori il Chelsea, urlando ad una telecamera della televisione, e potrebbe affrontare la rabbia della commissione disciplinare dell’UEFA.
Drogba si è scusato per avere arringato l’arbitro norvegese Tom Henning Ovrebo e per le sue volgari espressioni usate davanti alle telecamere a bordo campo.
“Non sappiamo cosa succederà a riguardo, ma non posso immaginare che le persone che prendono le decisioni all’UEFA, se sono persone di calcio e non autorità burocratiche, non capiscano che le sue scuse andavano bene” Hiddink ha dichiarato alla stampa dopo che la sua squadra ha battuto l’Arsenal per 4-1 domenica.
“Non mi aspetto molte conseguenze, sarebbe molto peculiare se ce ne fossero.”
Precedentemente la stessa domenica, il segretario generale dell’UEFA David Taylor aveva dichiarato che il comportamento di Drogba non era stato una bella vista e che era un affronto per la campagna di rispetto promossa dall’UEFA e dalla FA inglese.
L’UEFA non sembra avere fretta di punire Drogba e Taylor ha dichiarato che prima di tutto il comitato deve raccogliere tutte le prove.
“Stiamo per cominciare una investigazione disciplinare ma riguardo alla natura e durata della punizione prima di decidere dobbiamo raccogliere tutte le prove” ha detto Taylor alla BBC radio 5.

Veronica Lario: a woman scorned

Former actress Veronica Lario is Mr Berlusconi’s second wife, and first caught his attention when she stripped off during a play in Milan in 1980.

He wooed her by sending her flowers and complimenting her on her acting talents and the couple married in 1990, after Mr Berlusconi divorced his first wife, Carla Dall’ Oglio, in 1985.

Despite having three children together, all now in their twenties, the pair have increasingly lived separate lives.

The ebullient and energetic Mr Berlusconi subjects himself to a punishing schedule, jetting around Italy on official engagements and frequently appearing in three or more cities in a day.

He has even suggested, in his usual jovial, jokey manner, that his wife had an affair with the mayor of Venice, a bearded Left-wing philosopher.

Miss Lario, 52, spends much of her time at the family home in Milan, a palatial mansion on the outskirts of the city, or travelling overseas without her husband.

She shuns the public arena but has expressed views which are markedly more liberal than her Right-wing husband on subjects as diverse as bioethics and the war in Iraq.

The 72-year-old prime minister’s penchant for consorting with gorgeous young women, from models to actresses, has often landed him in hot water with his glamorous wife, turning their private life into a very public soap opera followed avidly by Italians.

On the subject of a possible divorce, she once said: “I could say that I’ve been thinking about it for 10 years, and that I’m slow in taking decisions.” Two years ago she demanded, and received, a public apology after Mr Berlusconi told a former men’s magazine model that he would love to run off with her if he was not already married.

His contrition did not stop him, however, from continuing his political patronage of the young woman, Mara Carfagna, and last year when he was re-elected he made her, apparently without irony, his equal opportunities minister.

The issue exploded again last week, when Miss Lario angrily denounced his party’s consideration of four young actresses and models as European Parliament candidates.

Miss Lario chose to make clear her displeasure in the most public way possibile, sending an email to Italy’s national news agency in which she said she and her children had “suffered” from Mr Berlusconi’s flirtatious and indiscrete behaviour.

Should the divorce go ahead, Miss Lario will want to ensure that both she and her children are well provided for. “It’s for my children that I live,” she said recently. “And fight.”

Ha anche suggerito, nel suo solito modo scherzoso, che sua moglie potesse avere una relazione con il sindaco di Venezia, un barbuto filosofo di sinistra.

La signora Lario, 52 anni, passa molto del suo tempo nella casa di famiglia di Milano, una villa di periferia, oppure viaggiando in America senza il marito.

Evita le apparizioni pubbliche ma ha espresso opinioni marcatamente più liberali rispetto a quelle destrorse del marito, riguardo a questioni come la bioetica e la guerra in Iraq.

Il debole del settantaduenne primo ministro per gli incontri con bellissime giovani donne, modelle ed attrici, lo ha spesso fatto scontrare con la sua attraente moglie, trasformando la loro vita privata in una telenovela pubblica, avidamente seguita dagli italiani.

Riguardo al possibile divorzio, una volta lei dichiarò: “Potrei dire che ci ho pensato per 10 anni, e che sono lenta a prendere decisioni.”. Due anni fa ha domandato ed ottenuto pubbliche scuse dopo che il signor Berlusconi ha detto ad una ex modella di riviste solo per uomini che sarebbe volentieri fuggito con lei se non fosse stato già sposato.

Il rimorso non gli ha comunque impedito di continuare a proteggere la carriera politica della giovane Mara Carfagna, e l’anno scorso quando fu rieletto la fece diventare, apparentemente senza ironia, il suo ministro delle eguali opportunità.

Il problema è esploso ancora la settimana scorsa quando la signora Lario ha denunciato in maniera rabbiosa le preferenze di suo marito per giovani attrici e modelle come candidate per il Parlamento Europeo.

La signora Lario ha scelto di dichiarare apertamente il suo malcontento nel modo più pubblico possibile, mandando una email alle agenzie di stampa italiane nella quale dichiarava che lei ed i suo figli hanno sofferto per il comportamento indiscreto del signor Berlusconi.

Se il divorzio dovesse attuarsi, la signora Lario vorrà assicurare per se e per suoi figli un giusto trattamento. “Vivo e combatto per i miei figli” ha detto recentemente.

England football captain John Terry’s mother and mother-in-law have been arrested for shoplifting.

Sue Terry, 50, and Sue Poole, 54, were cautioned after being caught with £800 of clothes and groceries from Tesco and Marks & Spencer.

Among the items were said to be girls’ flip flops, leggings, casual shirts, men’s and ladies’ watches, a green track suit and groceries including sweets and pet food.

The two women, who live on the same exclusive street as the £135,000-a-week Chelsea star, were stopped by police as they loaded their car at an out-of-town shopping centre in Weybridge, Surrey.

Officers had been alerted by security staff who were suspicious about their behaviour.

The women were arrested on suspicion of theft and taken to nearby Staines police station where they accepted an official caution - essentially an admission of guilt.

The incident, which happened at about 3pm on Wednesday, will be an embarrassment to 28-year-old defender Terry in his role as a figurehead for the national team and the Football Association.

The two stores concerned have their own connections with the England squad

Tesco is the official England supermarket and proudly mentions on its website its recognition of the ‘importance of football as the national sport’.

The store’s chief executive Sir Terry Leahy is also one of the vice-presidents for the country’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup. As for Marks & Spencer, it provides the England team with suits.

Police are said to have been stunned when they realised the identity of the two women they had arrested.

‘They seemed at a loss to explain. One said they had no idea why she’d taken sports gear as she didn’t even like wearing the stuff. They seemed shaken up.’

An astonished trolley attendant at the Brooklands Shopping Centre said yesterday: ‘They just walked out with two large trolleys brimming with clothes. Then they were stopped by several security men. I didn’t know what was going on.’

Last night the women were claiming innocence - suggesting there had been a ‘ misunderstanding’. It was not clear what the misunderstanding was. Solicitor Angus McBride, who represents Terry, said his understanding from the women was that they were innocent.

Sue Terry, 50 anni e Sue Poole, 54 anni, sono state arrestate dopo essere state scoperte con vestiti e cibarie rubate ai supermercati Tesco e Marks & Spencer, per un valore di 800 sterline.

Tra gli oggetti rubati sono stati elencati reggicalze, ciabatte, camicie, orologi da uomo e da donna, una tuta verde e cibarie comprendenti caramelle e cibo per cani.

Le due donne, che vivono nella stessa strada del quartiere esclusivo dove vive la star del Chelsea pagata 135.000 sterline a settimana, sono state fermate dalla polizia mentre caricavano la loro macchina in un centro commerciale fuori città a Weybridge, nel Surrey.

I poliziotti sono stati allertati dallo staff della sicurezza che si sono insospettiti per il loro comportamento.

Le donne sono state arrestate per sospetto di furto e portate alla vicina stazione di polizia di Staines dove hanno firmato un documento che è essenzialmente un’ammissione di colpa.

L’incidente, che è successo alle 3 del pomeriggio di mercoledì, sarà una fonte di imbarazzo per il ventottenne difensore John Terry, che è un simbolo per la squadra nazionale e per la Football Association.

I due supermercati hanno anche interessi nella squadra inglese.

Tesco è il supermarket ufficiale della nazionale e sottolinea con orgoglio sul proprio sito l’importanza del calcio come sport nazionale.

Il direttore esecutivo del supermercato è, Sir Terry Leahy, anche uno dei vicepresidenti per la campagna inglese per ospitare i mondiali del 2018.
Invece Marks & Spencer fornisce la squadra inglese con tute.

I poliziotti hanno dichiarato di essere stati molto sorpresi una volta scoperta l’indentità delle due donne arrestate.

‘Sembravano incapaci di spiegare. Una ha detto che non avevano idea del perchè avesse preso abiti sportivi, e che non le piaceva neppure indossarli. Sembravano molto agitate.’

Uno stupefatto responsabile di carrelli al Brooklands Shopping Centre ha detto ieri:
‘Sono semplicemente camminate fuori con due carrelli pieni di vestiti. Poi sono state fermate da diverse guardie della sicurezza. Non capivo cosa stava succedendo.’

Ieri sera le donne si dichiaravano innocenti - suggerendo che si trattava di un ‘malinteso’. Non è stato chiarito di che malinteso si trattasse. L’avvocato Angus McBride, che rappresenta Terry, ha detto che da quello che ha capito le due donne sono innocenti.
